The University of Melbourne – Engineering Workshop and Student Spaces
DesignInc created the Engineering Workshop and Student Spaces for The University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia.
The GCCMC offers new teaching and research facility that meets the specific requirements for the conservation of two and three dimensional art works. These functions had previously been embedded within the University of Melbourne’s Parkville campus, the re-located facility creates a new and engaging public interface on a prominent Swanston Street site. The new Centre includes flexible undergraduate teaching laboratories, postgraduate research laboratories, specialist storage spaces, exhibition entry, staff administration offices and meeting rooms. A new facade creates an engaging intervention to Swanston St opposite the Ian Potter Museum of Art. A ribbon of yellow steel across the building length provides a playful threshold that mediates the existing street trees, structural columns, and frames internal and external views. The new facility successfully responds to the client’s specific brief for complex internal environments and conservation processes, whilst improving natural daylight, visibility and the GCCMC’s identity with minimal use of resources.
