University of Lethbridge – Isttaniokaksini Science Commons
KPMB Architects designed the innovative and dynamic Isttaniokaksini Science Commons for the University of Lethbridge in Lethbridge, Canada.
Set among Alberta’s picturesque hills, the University of Lethbridge’s new 387,500-square-foot Isttaniokaksini / Science Commons is the recently completed epicenter for transdisciplinary research and teaching between the fields of chemistry, biological science, biochemistry, neuroscience, psychology, physics and astronomy. With the idea that “no single discipline in science can answer all the questions,” the various industries experiment, study and theorize next to one another with the help of:
· Open and modular lab research space for more convenient contact between professionals
· Easy reconfiguration of lab spaces for interdisciplinary teamwork
· Small cluster areas within each lab space, with opportunities for collaboration at top of mind
· An atrium serving as a central “hub” and campus-wide gathering space with entrances to each research and laboratory area
The Isttaniokaksini / Science Commons is a critical component of a larger vision to diversify Alberta’s economy into the knowledge and innovation industries. A tailor-made integrated design process was fundamental to promoting active discourse between researchers, instructors, users and the design team to define the qualities that should drive the creation of a transdisciplinary environment unique to the University.
