  • This project at Texas State University’s Alkek Library involved a remarkable transformation of the former first floor circulation desk into a licensed Starbucks café. Part of a reimagined Learning Commons project to meet the needs of today’s students, the Starbucks conversion provides amenities and enhancements for students attending the university.

As the first Starbucks built as a “space within a space,” it presented unique structural challenges. The new loads needed to be supported by the existing structure without extending walls to the structure above.

Pfluger Architects collaborated closely with the structural engineer and contractor to overcome these challenges, ensuring a seamless integration. The result is a vibrant and popular gathering space that has revitalized the library, enhancing its role as a central hub for students and visitors.
