American School Foundation of Guadalajara Phase 1

GVA and Flansburgh Architects designed the new ASFG building in Guadalajara integrating bold, sustainable features inspired by the city’s cultural heritage, maximizing green space, and promoting natural ventilation.

  • area / size 177,034 sqft
  • Completed 2021
  • Location Guadalajara, Mexico,
  • The new ASFG building represents a bold approach and vision for the future, serving 1,500 students. Located on a vertically developing site, the building integrates into the context by doubling the existing academic space across 7 stories, maximizing green space and providing state-of-the-art facilities that support 21st century education. The project’s vivid colors, sculptural form, use of natural materials and crisp design are inspired by Guadalajara’s cultural heritage and rich blend of traditional and modern architecture. Greenery creates a healthy environment that improves air quality, and new trees reduce solar gain by providing natural sunshades. This green integration into the building creates an outlet for nature in an urban setting, and greenery rejuvenates the human mind. Sustainable design is integrated into every aspect of the building’s design and construction process. Over 90% of the school is naturally lit, reducing electrical loads for artificial lighting. The school’s open design, room layout, and operable vents promote natural airflow through the building. Exposed concrete floors, made from 75% local sand and crushed stone, reduce the amount of project materials and minimize energy costs for production and transportation. The long thermal lag of concrete, coupled with Guadalajara’s diurnal thermal oscillation, causes the floors to radiate coolness due to low nighttime temperatures. Natural ventilation and passive cooling save the energy needed for air circulation and temperature control. Acoustic systems implemented in every space of the building generate an optimal environment for education. The ASFG building becomes the tangible proposal for the new education of the future.
