Pfeiffer University’s Center for Health Sciences reflects a commitment to community integration, sustainability, and adaptability. Rooted in a collaborative and integrative design process, the building blends modern functionality with the heritage of downtown Albemarle. The facility features specialized spaces like the Center for Advanced Clinical Simulation Education (CACSE), which includes simulated ICU rooms, a surgical suite, an emergency department trauma bay, and a cadaver lab, all equipped with high-fidelity, computerized human simulators. Sited next to the oldest historic structure in the county, the ground floor is dedicated to the city. In addition to the CACSE, the entry level has a public greenspace, a large multi-Purpose Room, and a rural clinic with the potential for students and faculty to provide essential community healthcare services. The building emphasizes flexibility and adaptability, featuring modular furniture and versatile spaces that can evolve alongside changes in healthcare advancements and community needs. A hallmark of the Center’s design is its focus on creating environments that facilitate learning everywhere. Interior spaces promote wellness for students, staff, and visitors alike with ample natural daylight, connection to the outdoors, and thoughtfully integrated landscaping. Highlighting a commitment to environmental stewardship, the facility’s sustainable construction practices prioritized locally sourced labor and materials to minimize transportation-related impacts and foster a sense of local ownership. This dynamic facility serves as both an academic hub and a symbol of Albemarle’s growth. The architecture serves to balance form and function, supporting healthcare education and innovation while celebrating the community’s rich history. The Center’s architectural excellence, paired with its mission-driven purpose, ensures that it will remain a cornerstone of education and economic vitality for generations to come.
