Smith+Nephew – Surgical Innovation and Training Academy
Unispace‘s design transformed a historic Munich site into a cutting-edge Surgical Innovation and Training Academy, blending labs, VR training, and exhibition spaces for global medical technology leader, Smith+Nephew.
Unispace transformed a historic Munich site into a cutting-edge Surgical Innovation and Training Academy for global medical technology leader, Smith+Nephew. This 3,500 sqm flagship facility seamlessly blends advanced labs, VR training, and immersive exhibition spaces, creating a dynamic hub where thousands of healthcare professionals from around the world converge to pioneer the future of medicine. The design, which embraces creativity, functionality, sustainability, and innovation, elevates both the user experience and the educational impact of the space.
The design challenge for Unispace was to transform a nearly 50-year-old former casino in Munich into a state-of-the-art Surgical Innovation and Training Academy. Originally designed for hospitality, the building presented significant structural and logistical hurdles. The client envisioned a flexible, multi-functional space spanning 3,500 sqm that could accommodate up to 5,000 healthcare professionals annually. The facility needed to house wet and dry labs, VR training areas, an auditorium, and advanced surgical training facilities – all within a cohesive design that fosters collaboration and learning. Unispace met these challenges through a combination of innovation, creative problem-solving, and strategic collaboration.
The final design integrates diverse functional spaces with a focus on creativity and innovation. The advanced surgical labs were outfitted with specialised materials such as impact-resistant surfaces and anti-microbial coatings, ensuring both durability and hygiene. For the VR training areas, high-resolution, interactive displays and immersive sound systems were employed, creating a fully engaging, modern learning experience. The exhibition spaces were designed with flexible modular displays and high-quality finishes, enabling dynamic presentations and product showcases that align with Smith+Nephew’s ever-evolving technology.
To maintain a seamless connection with Smith+Nephew’s brand identity, Unispace incorporated key elements that reflect their innovative spirit. The colour palette, derived from the client’s branding, was applied throughout the facility to create a unified and contemporary aesthetic. High-quality glass, polished metals, and sleek finishes were used to embody cutting-edge technology and sophistication. Notable features include an interactive history wall, crafted from backlit acrylic panels, and the blue-lighted entrance tunnel inspired by Munich’s Allianz Arena, which not only provides visual impact but also connects the design to its local context.
In terms of sustainability, the academy’s wet and dry labs posed environmental challenges. The wet labs, where temperature, air quality, and safety are critical, required the installation of a new air-handling unit (AHU) and a 70 sqm plant room to ensure consistent, controlled conditions essential for high-level medical research and training. By employing sustainable building practices and integrating energy-efficient systems, the academy minimises environmental impact while providing a flexible and adaptable learning environment.
Ultimately, the design prioritises functionality, offering versatile spaces that support a wide range of activities. The innovative integration of technology, sustainability, and user-centric design solutions has transformed an outdated building into a modern, high-performance hub for medical training and research. The facility empowers healthcare professionals to engage with the latest in medical technology, collaborate with global teams, and push the boundaries of what is possible in-patient care.
