Oyster Bay High School – Innovation + Collaborative STEM Spaces
The renovation of Oyster Bay High School by BBS Architects, Engineers & Landscape Architects features cutting-edge learning spaces, including a Robotics Lab and TV studio, fostering innovation and collaboration among students.
In 2024, the Oyster Bay High School has completed a transformative renovation project, fostering cutting-edge learning environments and spirit of innovation and collaboration for local students.
1st Floor Renovations: The Innovation Lab – A Hub of Technology
On the first floor, the project included the conversion of approximately 2,200 square feet of floor space encompassing the former library Conference Room and adjacent storage areas into a state-of-the-art Robotics Lab, complete with a ‘Genius Bar’ area, and (3) Flex Rooms with storage. The Innovation Lab, in particular, stands out as a hub for creativity, allowing students to explore engineering and robotics in ways that were not possible before. The lab provides a platform for students to translate their ideas into tangible projects, fostering both their technical skills and their ability to work collaboratively. The new lab fully embraces 3D printing as a source of inspiration and a gateway to learning new skills. Oyster Bay students use the state-of-the-art 3D printers to support their Robotics Club and to create innovative devices, like robot launchers and robotic claws, demonstrating the practical applications of their newfound knowledge.
2nd Floor Renovations: Elevating Media & Innovation
The transformation of the school facilities on the second floor marks a significant shift from traditional classroom settings to modern educational spaces equipped with the latest technology. Here, (2) STEM/innovation rooms, known as Google Lounge, were designed by BBS, totaling a substantial 2,900 square feet of learning environments.Beyond the lounge, BBS reimagined (3) outdated classrooms, an office, and storage closets into a cutting-edge TV studio with a dedicated control room. This ‘cOllaB’ space allows students to experience the full spectrum of broadcast production, from anchoring and directing to managing technical equipment like cameras, audio/visual equipment and controls, audio mixers, teleprompters, and others. The TV studio mirrors real-world news environments, giving students hands-on experience that is both educational and engaging.
Oyster Bay High School looks forward to the positive impact these interior renovations will have on the educational experience of its students.
