Georgia Institute of Technology – CODA Building
ASD|SKY designed the Georgia Tech CODA building by closely collaborating with multiple user groups, focusing on intricate spatial and functional requirements for a unique higher education experience.
ASD|SKY’s role on this project began with assisting Georgia Tech in envisioning the potential for their space in the new CODA building, a multi-step process that required an in-depth understanding of the highly variable and detailed expectations for the (26) Georgia Tech user groups slated to occupy the building. The composite of user groups included (3) components of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI), (13) divisions of GT Office of Information and Technology (OIT), (3) Academic Units, (3) Interdisciplinary Research Institutes, and various multi-disciplinary research “neighborhoods”.
ASD|SKY defined a methodology to extract complicated functional and spatial requirements for each group through close collaboration with Georgia Tech’s Capital Planning & Space Management and Design & Construction liaisons as well as coordination with Cushman and Wakefield. Our iterative process enabled us to become deeply ingrained in the world of Georgia Tech and to have intimate understanding of the complexities of higher education research, mastering the balance of public exposure and privacy, as deemed appropriate, with the ultimate goal to create a research incubator and education experience unlike any other. Through innumerable site visits, interviews, visioning sessions and programming meetings, we were able to develop a successful adjacency diagram, planning strategy, and design-concept with an in-budget cost model that lent itself to a unique and cutting-edge higher-education experience through design. Our prioritization of close interaction with the end-users was invaluable to both our process and the project’s ultimate success.
