  • In-between Architects prioritizes well-being, human connection, and natural materials to craft environments that foster shared experiences and lasting memories. Collaborating with Simon Chee Architects to create an 820 sq.m co-working space at the west campus of Hong Kong Polytechnic University provided the opportunity to bring this philosophy to fruition.

The team draws inspiration from the tranquil experience of walking inside a park, and creates a space that would seamlessly bridge the gap between teachers and students during non-academic hours.

Upon entering the space via the elevators, visitors are greeted by a grand 2-storey lobby adorned with L-shaped bleacher seating. This versatile design not only serves as a hub for talks, discussions, and shared moments but also doubles as a comfortable waiting area for daily use. The layout was meticulously crafted to encourage interaction, foster a welcoming ambiance, and promote a sense of community among all who enter.

Inside the facility, a strategic arrangement of consultation rooms, meeting spaces, private study booths, and casual reading nooks line the periphery, offering a diverse range of settings for various activities. Positioned at the heart of the floor plate, a central common pantry overlooks a serene roof deck, serving as a central point for social gatherings and moments of relaxation.

Architect Eddie Wong plays with the varying ceiling heights to enhance intimacy in meeting spaces while promoting openness in communal areas adds depth and character to the space, creating a dynamic and engaging environment.

To seamlessly connect these distinct areas and functions within the innovative co-working space, a 2m wide “walking path” designed in graceful curves serves as a guiding element that leads visitors through the entirety of the space, encouraging exploration and discovery.

“Through enlarging the width of circulation, we create ample opportunities for people to interact and move at a leisurely pace, as some individuals find that their thoughts flow more freely when they are walking.”

The thoughtful selection of materials, such as moss on wood panels, overhanging green ceiling plates along the walking path, and lush green carpets, creates an immersive experience that beckons users to “take a walk into the wood” and engage in conversations not only as professors and students but as good friends.

These natural elements evoke a sense of tranquility and connection, inviting individuals to engage in meaningful interactions and fostering a sense of community within the co-working space.
