Werklund Agriculture and Technology Centre
GGA-Architecture’s Werklund Agriculture and Technology Centre in Olds, Alberta, transforms the former James Murray Building into a dynamic hub for innovation, collaboration, and contemporary agribusiness education.
The renovation and addition to the former James Murray Building at Olds College marks a dramatic transformation that reshapes the campus landscape, creating a dynamic space that embodies innovation in agribusiness and agronomy. Once an aging, introverted structure, the building has been reimagined as the Werklund Agriculture & Technology Centre, an open, collaborative incubator designed to celebrate learning and foster a vibrant student culture.
At the heart of the design is a new atrium that revitalizes an underused courtyard, now flooded with natural light through expansive clerestory glazing. Supported by large, woven glulam beams, the atrium creates a seamless connection between the built environment and nature—symbolizing the balance between farming practices and the organic growth of soil and sky.
The renovation introduces modern educational principles with flexible classrooms, cutting-edge technology labs, and hands-on manufacturing tech labs and maker spaces. These innovative learning environments are designed to be open and adaptable, featuring large folding doors that encourage interaction and visibility, enhancing both the interior and exterior experience. The addition of an experimental greenhouse further elevates the Centre’s offerings, showcasing advancements in agricultural technology.
A strong emphasis on collaboration runs throughout the building, with spaces intentionally designed to foster group work and active experimentation. Developed in close consultation with faculty and administration, these spaces meet the academic and community goals of the college, enhancing both the student and faculty experience.
By embracing the vision of 21st-century learning, the Werklund Agriculture & Technology Centre now serves as a gateway to the future of education at Olds College. The building encourages connections between students, industry partners, donors, and the broader community. This renovation transforms the college and sets a new standard for campus development, creating a vibrant hub for innovation, exploration, and discovery in agriculture and technology.
This project was honored with a 2024 WoodWorks Prairie Wood Design Award for its exceptional use of wood in design and construction.
