LaSalle Secondary School
Lemay, Leclerc, and Prisme, in consortium, designed LaSalle Secondary School in Montreal to harmonize interior and exterior learning spaces through a human-centered design that fosters collaboration, community engagement, and sustainable educational practices.
LaSalle Secondary School: Harmonizing Interior and Exterior Learning Spaces
The new LaSalle Secondary School design embraces a human-centered approach through flexible, evolving pedagogical spaces that encourage collaboration and social interaction. Strategically positioned within a comprehensive educational campus adjacent to a CEGEP, elementary school, and aquatic center, the school establishes meaningful connections with its surroundings.
A newly created outdoor soccer field serves as the vibrant campus centerpiece. The north façade of the building offers prime views of this dynamic space and houses the school’s central hub. This main circulation area balances movement and gathering opportunities, creating an internal energy that complements the outdoor activities.
Students, staff, and visitors enter through the south façade, which features expansive windows that flood the interior with natural light. The five-story vertical design allows the school to integrate seamlessly into the urban landscape while minimizing its footprint. This approach maximizes green space development and enhances student well-being.
Beyond enriching community life in the LaSalle borough, the new school provides an inviting, functional, and sustainable learning environment that satisfies LEED Gold certification standards.
The distinctive architecture of LaSalle Secondary School transforms the institution into a space that fosters collaboration, openness, and pride among students, teachers, and visitors. More than just an educational facility, the school functions as a venue for dialogue and engagement with its surroundings. This innovative design approach represents an important step toward the school of tomorrow, strengthening the educational institution’s role as a vital community contributor.
