  • Trinity College has embarked on a transformative journey with the construction of a state-of-the-art theatre, solidifying its position as a leading institution in the region. The theatre’s design epitomises Trinity College’s unwavering dedication to embracing 21st-century educational opportunities, providing students with a dynamic space for authentic learning experiences.

Beyond its role as an educational facility, the theatre also holds immense potential to transform the cultural landscape of the Gawler region. With a notable absence of a dedicated theatre space in the area, Trinity College’s new theatre aims to fill this void and emerge as a leading performing arts hub.

Central to the theatre’s vision is the aspiration to create an authentic partnership with the Kaurna people, reflecting the College’s commitment to Indigenous narratives and connections with the local landscape. This vision finds expression through the concept of the Three Rivers, symbolising unity and connection and deeply integrated into the theatre’s design elements.

Led by Indigenous Artist and Landscape Designer, Paul Hertzich, the project explores the relationship between the land and the local Gawler area, with references to emu symbolism and the convergence of the three rivers. The incorporation of emu-inspired motifs, such as dark green hues and herringbone patterns, enriches the theatre’s aesthetic and reinforces its thematic cohesion. The concept of the Three Rivers emerged early in discussions with Trinity College, aligning with its name and the religious significance of ‘Trinity.’

From the moment one enters the theatre, a sense of sophistication and elegance envelops them. The interior design exudes a level of refinement, with every detail meticulously curated to evoke a sense of awe and inspiration. The materiality of the space reflects a harmonious blend of modernity and tradition, with elements inspired by the emu feather motif infusing the interior with a sense of natural beauty and cultural significance.

Creativity and innovation are woven into every aspect of the theatre’s design, from the fluidity of the seating arrangements to the dynamic movement reflected in the timber batten design on the walls. The auditorium, while traditional in its shape for acoustic purposes, is transformed into a modern marvel with its acoustically designed timber batten cladding and multipurpose performance stage. The timber batten design reflects movement and flow, , which is both visually striking and acoustically functional. The successful outcome of the design of the beautiful timber battens was the result of the partnership with the design team, Sculptform and the contactor, to ensure that this significant design element was executed expertly.

Trinity College’s Marnkutyi Parirna Theatre represents a transformative investment in education, culture, and community. By embracing innovation, fostering partnerships, the theatre embodies the College’s commitment to excellence and social impact. As a beacon of creativity and cultural exchange, the theatre enriches the educational experience of students and serves as a catalyst for positive change in Gawler and beyond.
