University of Michigan-Dearborn Renick Center
Neumann/Smith Architecture’s renovation of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Renick Center revitalizes the first floor into a dynamic, student-centered hub that enhances connection, collaboration, and campus identity in Dearborn, Michigan.
The first floor of the Renick University Center at UM-Dearborn has been transformed into a vibrant hub that enhances the on-campus experience for its predominantly commuter student body. The renovation introduces bold branding, enhanced student services, offices, and flexible zones for independent work and group meetings. Featuring a fireplace lounge and the University’s signature maize and blue, the refreshed design creates a dynamic, student-centered environment where students and staff can connect, learn, and thrive.
The vision was to open the first floor and showcase a vibrant, branded student experience that reflects the energy of the Dearborn campus. The design increases visibility for key services while introducing zoned spaces that support independent study, collaboration, and campus learning between classes.
Additionally, the renovation reimagines how staff work on campus—creating collaborative, efficient environments that meet the demands of today’s hybrid workforce. The design also brings together administrative and career services offices, while strengthening the student union’s presence as a central hub for connection.
Design priorities were shaped by extensive engagement with student and staff user groups. New features—like a flexible orientation room and intentional photo backdrops—celebrate student milestones while supporting first-year and new transitions. The updated design fosters academic and social connection while reinforcing a cohesive campus identity. Every design element, from spatial layout to visual elements, was guided by the goal of creating an inspiring, adaptable, and inclusive space for all students along with developing efficient and convenient workspaces for staff to help support student life on campus.
Neumann/Smith first renovated the Renick Center in 2004. Decades later, our team is honored to continue our relationship with the University of Michigan and reimagine this student center once again. The transformation reflects our commitment to adapting to the evolving needs of students while celebrating the spirit of the campus community.
