Mesa County Early Childhood Center at Clifton Community Campus
RDG Planning & Design’s Mesa County Early Childhood Center in Clifton, Colorado, harmoniously blends education and community, fostering connection through its thoughtfully designed spaces that reflect local culture and support family well-being.
As a part of the larger Clifton Community Campus, the Mesa County Early Childhood Education Center reflects a community-wide investment in early childhood development and family well-being. Co-located with a public library and multifunctional community facility, the center provides care, education and comprehensive support services for families throughout the Clifton area. In close collaboration with Mesa County, RDG Planning & Design helped bring this vision to life, creating a space that aligns with the community’s values and supports its aspirations for a stronger, more connected future.
The 13-acre site in Colorado’s Western Slope Valley, the 45,300-SF facility is strategically positioned between an elementary school and a residential neighborhood, offering both accessibility and a sense of community integration. The design features a palette of reds and blues that echo the region’s natural landscape, while exterior materials such as perforated metal panels contribute to a seamless indoor-outdoor connection and add dynamic visual texture. Each design element was intentionally selected to reflect the local culture and create a welcoming, inclusive environment children, families and staff alike.
Inside, the center features 12 classrooms designed to serve children from 6 weeks to 5 years old, along with a dedicated space for after-school, providing essential support for working families. Each classroom is equipped with interactive materials that promote hands-on learning and includes direct access to age-specific outdoor learning environments that encourage movement and exploration. These outdoor spaces are thoughtfully tailored to support both cognitive and physical development across various stages of growth.
Beyond the classrooms, the facility includes a computer lab, administrative office and flexible multipurpose meeting rooms that can adapt to the evolving needs of the broader campus community. A standout element is the community hall and event space, envisioned as a central gathering point for residents. Designed to accommodate a wide range of users, from large celebrations to educational events, this flexible venue reinforces the center’s role as a local hub. Through its design, RDG celebrates the unique identity of the Clifton community, creating a vibrant, inclusive space that supports lifelong learning and connection.
