  • The Ds. Abraham Hellenbroekschool in Zwijndrecht received a new building for its more than 200 pupils to replace a cramped, dark 1975 facility. Required to meet the Dutch BENG energy standard, the school’s brief resulted in a bright, transparent and easily navigable design that supports both community and individual group identity.

EGM’s “Rondom de Brink” concept arranges four distinct building volumes like a small village around a central brink, linked by a transparent corridor that brings daylight, orientation and openness throughout. Each age group occupies its own “house” with a dedicated learning square that flows naturally into shared spaces. Varied roof forms create high, pleasant classrooms and give each unit a unique character. A wide wooden tribune overlooks the patio and transitions into a large multifunctional piece of furniture on the learning plaza. The small-scale layout fosters a safe, secure atmosphere where children feel seen; staggered breaks ensure no one is overwhelmed by crowds. Flexible elements—like a kindergarten gym with movable walls—allow rooms to be reconfigured for events and parent evenings.

Sustainability is integral: the gas-free building uses two heat pumps, more than 100 solar panels, low-temperature underfloor heating coupled to a WKO system, high insulation, heat recovery and continuous CO2-controlled ventilation. Each house has separate entrances and installations so they can be decoupled and repurposed if needed. The timber structure leaves beams exposed for warmth and carbon storage, and many materials from the old school were reclaimed—lighting, sanitary ware, panels, ceilings and even the playground tiles. The outdoor area is 50% greener than before.

Generous windows and rooflights maximize daylight, creating a calm, natural atmosphere where classrooms feature wide window sills for reading and the staff room offers a homely view of the green play area.
