Hillel Academy – New Girls High School
DRAW Collective’s Hillel Academy’s New Girls High School in Pittsburgh masterfully integrates collaborative learning spaces and a warm sanctuary for worship, enriching the educational experience while prioritizing safety and community.
Designed as more than a school, the Hillel Academy’s new Girls High School incorporates collaborative, safe, and welcoming environments that support worship, learning, and socialization. It is a sanctuary for the students, staff and community.
The new addition to the Beacon Street building features an open collaboration space with four classrooms, each decorated with finishes that stimulate young minds and encourage creativity. The new façade features shading panels to help regulate the classroom temperatures while allowing students to receive natural lighting. The new façade features a large STEM classroom, illuminated by an abundance of bright, natural light. Within the STEM space, students will have access to a creative and open space that promotes a positive educational experience.
Off the entrance is a new shul decorated with intentional finishes and furniture to promote flexibility and encompass students in the Jewish faith. Built-in bookshelves along the wall house religious texts to use during worship or for studying, as shuls serve as a space for praying, studying, and gathering. The ceiling’s woodwork cutouts were designed to resemble the arms of a menorah, further elevating this religious space.
The new secure entrance features a dedicated school security office with a sign-in area to reassure students, staff, and families that the Academy strives to provide the safest environment possible.
In the next phase, Hillel and DRAW are collaborating on the design of a second addition, which includes an expanded gymnasium. This space will promote student wellness and activity among the high school students.
