CentraCare – University of Minnesota Medical Education Building
HGA’s CentraCare’s University of Minnesota Medical Education Building in St. Cloud seamlessly integrates innovative design with sustainability and inclusivity, fostering a new generation of healthcare professionals in rural Minnesota.
The new CentraCare – University of Minnesota Medical Education Building will expand medical education and training in the region, placing students in the heart of rural Minnesota at the CentraCare Regional Campus. A partnership with CentraCare Health Systems and the University of Minnesota, the educational facility will help to fill a growing shortage of physicians in rural Minnesota.
Beginning with a robust student engagement process, the design team incorporated feedback from existing medical students into the design. The new facility prioritizes well-being, inclusion, and collaboration, enhancing the experience for students on-site. Additionally, the design emphasizes flexibility, access to daylight, and variety in learning spaces.
A groundbreaking simulation lab is the centerpiece of the facility, configured for various medical scenarios and equipped with advanced technology. Reflecting the unique central Minnesota environment, the facility takes students on a visual journey, from blue—echoing the region’s lakes and water—to the maroon, gold, and multicolored tones of the prairie. These color palettes also represent the collaboration between CentraCare and the University of Minnesota.
Sustainability and equity were key drivers in the design process, beginning with the adaptive reuse of an existing building. Modifications include optimized lighting, reduced energy consumption and carbon footprint, and improved indoor air quality.
Embracing the growing diversity in Central Minnesota’s population, appropriate washing and prayer areas are provided, supporting an equitable environment for all students and patients.
Symbolizing a commitment to the future of healthcare in Greater Minnesota, the new medical education building will help nurture a long line of physicians to train and serve in rural communities.
