Western Academy of Beijing – High School Gym

Studio Vapore’s redesign of the Western Academy of Beijing’s High School Gym elevates acoustics and school spirit through vibrant color schemes and dynamic acoustic panels, fostering an energetic environment for students.

  • area / size 10,764 sqft
  • Completed 2025
  • Location Beijing, China,
  • Studio Vapore was commissioned to refresh the existing high school gym at the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), an international school whose mascot — the Tiger — represents energy, movement, and school pride. The goal of the redesign was to significantly improve the gym’s acoustics while also uplifting the overall atmosphere of the space.

The design introduces a new system of acoustic felt panels arranged in a bold, directional pattern that wraps the walls. This graphic geometry brings a sense of movement to the large volume and helps orient the space visually. The felt panels work together with acoustic timber elements installed at high level, which absorb reverberation and clarify sound during games, assemblies, and daily PE classes.

Colour plays a central role in the transformation. Studio Vapore used vibrant tones drawn from the WAB Tigers identity, amplifying school spirit and infusing the gym with a renewed sense of energy. The pattern of colour and texture creates a dynamic backdrop for sports activities while remaining durable and easy to maintain.

The result is a brighter, more engaging sports environment that supports better sound quality, enhances visibility, and celebrates the school’s identity. Studio Vapore’s intervention demonstrates how targeted acoustic improvements combined with thoughtful visual design can reinvigorate even the most familiar campus spaces.
