University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) – Brugg-Windisch Campus
Evolution Design revitalizes the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) Brugg-Windisch Campus, enhancing learning environments with expressive, module-based spaces that promote collaboration and innovation.
Evolution Design has introduced new learning areas at the Campus Brugg-Windisch of the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), strengthening the on-site presence and enhancing the overall attractiveness of the campus.
Developed as part of Raum 2035, an FHNW-wide strategy defining the future of learning and working environments, the project was conceived as a pilot intervention, exploring how spatial design supports contemporary forms of teaching, learning, and collaboration while delivering clear added value for everyday campus life.
The project introduces four spatial modules created to support new forms of teaching, learning, and working:
- Coworking areas for individual and collaborative learning, as well as shared work during and beyond teaching hours, with a strong focus on coaching, exchange, and support
- Lounge for informal exchange, short breaks, or spontaneous conversations
- Forum for teaching, knowledge sharing, discussion, and networking
- Focus zone for concentrated learning without conversations or phone calls
One of the key challenges of the project was to implement a sustainable and effective transformation within an existing building. Rather than a full renovation, the project was conceived as a gentle architectural intervention. Existing floor finishes and ceilings were preserved, and structural modifications were deliberately avoided.
This called for a highly expressive design approach. Each module was therefore given a strong and distinctive identity – bringing joy and energy to the spaces while remaining in dialogue with the existing architecture.
Through careful spatial zoning – using furniture, bold colours, layered textures, generous greenery, and distinctive custom graphics – the open, collaborative, and future-oriented culture of FHNW finds clear spatial expression.
