Studio Vapore designed the Athletics Department for the Western Academy of Beijing as part of a broader, long-term renovation strategy developed in close collaboration with the school. The project forms one element of an ongoing partnership, supporting the transformation of existing facilities into spaces that reflect the school’s values, identity, and evolving needs.

Conceived as a central athletics hub rather than a collection of support rooms, the department brings together changing rooms, coach offices, and a physiotherapy and recovery area within a single, connected environment. The space is designed as a place where athletes prepare, focus, and “charge” before training sessions and competitions, as well as recover afterward.

Strong color contrasts, bold graphics, and a clear visual language create an atmosphere of energy and momentum. References to the school’s Tigers identity are embedded throughout the design, reinforcing team spirit and a sense of belonging. Lighting, materiality, and spatial sequencing are carefully calibrated to heighten anticipation and focus, supporting both physical readiness and mental preparation.

Beyond performance, the layout prioritizes clarity, efficiency, and comfort. Coach offices are positioned to maintain proximity to athletes, while the physiotherapy room is integrated as a visible and accessible part of daily routines. Durable materials and robust detailing ensure the spaces can withstand intensive use while maintaining a strong visual impact.

Developed through close dialogue with the school community, the Athletics Department functions as both a practical facility and a symbolic heart of school sports life, strengthening identity, motivation, and collective energy.
