  • PBK designed dynamic and collaborative learning spaces throughout Bellaire High School in Houston, Texas.

After solving complicated phasing and project objectives, the final design efficiently connects students with a stacked spectrum of multi-use, flexible learning environments. The academic wings create “Curriculum Neighborhoods” where students can focus, break-out, question, and learn. Different scaled environments foster peer collaboration, communal dining, and connectivity. With over 3,000 students, the new school fosters individuality through a variety of flexible furniture clusters and spaces.

While addressing needs for High Density and Small Footprint, the School prioritizes multi-functionality, variety, & connectivity. This strategy led design decisions from space planning down to furniture selection. Due to the need for a small footprint, the various programs of the New High School are “stacked”. This reduces travel time between spaces, maximizes daylighting, and promotes connectivity between all levels and programs of the building. The variety of learning environments challenges the “One-size fits all” mindset for learning, and provides a diverse and fulfilling experience for students and faculty.

Color and supergraphics establish community pride through branding. Hallway collab spaces invite students to pause, rest and work. High transparency enhances connections with the outside while maximizing daylighting. Sleek yet durable materiality creates a lasting new face for the campus. LEED certification was achieved through sustainable design strategies that benefit individuals, the community and global health.
