BCIS Elementary School Cafeteria
ATDESIGNOFFICE transformed a Beijing school restaurant into a vibrant, flexible space with an open layout, natural light, unique furniture configurations, and a focus on encouraging creativity and social interaction.
At the heart of the BCIS, there stands a restaurant brimming with creativity and vitality. It is not merely a dining place for children, but also a paradise for their social interactions and learning. With its unique skylight and furniture layout, this restaurant has become the most beloved community spot in the campus.
The old restaurant stood as an isolated island, its dining realms divided by walls into separate zones. Each eating area was demarcated by barriers, keeping them apart. However, with the ingenuity of the current design, the walls that once separated these spaces have been methodically dismantled, merging the once solitary zones into a cohesive ensemble. Now, it has transformed into a vast, luminous, and unobstructed dining expanse, where every corner breathes with the essence of liberty and harmony.
The heart of the restaurant is a grand atrium that captures the essence of light, occupying 40% of room. Channeling natural light indoors, it creates a bright and cozy dining atmosphere.. Sunlight filters through the atrium, casting its warmth on the children’s smiling faces, infusing their day with vitality and hope. The restaurant is highly flexible, easily adaptable to various needs. During meal times, it serves as a cozy dining area; at other times, it swiftly transforms into a multifunctional performance area, providing a stage for children to showcase their talents and academic achievements.
The furniture layout embraces seven distinct configurations, featuring a traditional dining area, a versatile sofa section, a greenery-adorned round table zone, a Chinese-style long table area, a high bar table section, a greenery-encircled long table area, and a circular booth zone.
In terms of furniture design, the restaurant features round booths that not only enhance the children’s liveliness but also encourage them to learn through social interaction. The long tables facilitate discussions among children, making it an ideal space for group studies or sharing stories. The sofa area, on the other hand, offers a more relaxed environment where children can unwind after their meals. The serving counter in the restaurant is adorned with glass bricks in a gradient of colors, which sparkle under the sunlight, resembling a dazzling starry sky and stimulating the children’s imagination. Various artistic lamps accompany different sets of furniture, providing ample light and adding an artistic flair. The walls are dotted with twinkling wall lamps, creating a romantic and warm atmosphere.
This elementary school restaurant in the international school is not just a place to dine; it is a space that inspires creativity and social interaction. Here, children can bask in the sunlight, savor delicious food, exchange ideas, and explore the world, making every day filled with endless possibilities.
