UIDE – Health Sciences Building
Contract Workplaces redesigned Universidad Internacional de Ecuador’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, blending technology and sustainable design to create inspiring educational spaces promoting well-being and interaction.
The Universidad Internacional de Ecuador (UIDE) is a highly prestigious academic institution currently undergoing a comprehensive renovation of its facilities. The primary goal is to align its physical spaces with the new academic programs and pedagogical approach, with technology serving as the central axis of its practices.
In 2022, the University had already engaged Contract Workplaces to renovate the ground floor of the Classroom Building and the Admissions area. This time, to continue supporting the institution in its transformation process and help it achieve its goals, UIDE once again called upon Contract Workplaces for the remodeling of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
The project consisted of a partial interior renovation and the creation of a new building envelope over a total area of 2,546 m². Existing spaces were upgraded, while new environments were created to generate a space that seamlessly combines cutting-edge technology, sustainability, and an inspiring design aligned with the identity previously developed by Contract during its earlier intervention. The ultimate goal was to enhance the quality of spaces available to students, adapting to current educational trends.
The main challenges of the project included creating a new building envelope that preserved and enhanced elements of the existing interior, achieving harmony between the old and the new. An efficient floor plan was prioritized, optimizing natural lighting and ventilation in line with contemporary trends in education.
The design focused on the well-being of its users, striving for a balance between educational spaces and areas for recreation and socialization. To achieve this, concepts promoting comfort and health were incorporated throughout the environment.
In terms of the project’s materialization, materials and colors were chosen to align with the brand’s color palette (yellow, burgundy, and blue), along with secondary shades such as the faculty’s characteristic light blue, orange, purple, green, and pink. These colors not only reflect the institution’s visual identity but also contribute to creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.
Art and graphics also played a key role in the project, incorporating graphic elements previously developed for the Classroom Building. At the client’s request, artistic tributes were included, such as references to Banksy’s “Game Changer,” adding a distinctive and cultural touch to the educational environment.
Technology was a fundamental component and played a key role in the project, with special emphasis on equipping the laboratories and integrating a Gesell chamber, among other state-of-the-art technological elements.
The final result was a project that not only meets the current demands of education but also addresses the specific requirements of the university center. The spaces created harmonize technology, sustainability, and well-being, integrating aesthetics and functionality to provide an environment that inspires learning and fosters interaction.
