Glenunga International High School Learning Building & Gymnasium
DesignInc‘s Glenunga International High School project focuses on creating a seamless connection between new multi-building expansions and existing structures, integrating bright, versatile spaces for academic and recreational activities.
The Glenunga International High School Redevelopment is a major multi-building expansion designed to enhance both educational and community spaces. The project features a three-storey science, technology, and learning building, as well as a double court gymnasium, each designed to support a wide range of academic and recreational activities. These new buildings are thoughtfully integrated with the existing Learning Hub’s sweeping curves and material palette, ensuring a seamless connection between the old and new structures. Bright, north-facing learning spaces and courts offer an abundance of natural light, spilling out onto outdoor landscapes, promoting a vibrant and inspiring learning environment.
The science, technology, and learning building is strategically positioned to capture key vistas of the north-eastern open space and offer views of the Adelaide Hills to the south-east. Pedestrian linkages between adjacent buildings flow into ‘learning streets’ that connect General Learning Areas (GLAs), staff facilities, and breakout ‘pods’, fostering an open, collaborative atmosphere. A key feature of the redevelopment is the ground-floor innovation centre and manufacturing space, where traditional and emerging technologies are creatively integrated. On the upper floors, ‘Da Vinci suites’ offer flexible spaces that can adapt to both science and art lessons.
The gymnasium stands out with its striking curved facade and robust street presence. With two basketball courts and retractable seating, it accommodates a variety of uses. Surrounding the courts are staff support areas, a fitness room, change amenities, and additional learning spaces, making it a versatile addition to the campus.
