Colégio PH School Renovation

Atelie Urbano designed a modern interior for Colégio PH in Rio de Janeiro, blending historical elements with contemporary design to create an innovative educational environment.

  • area / size 85,302 sqft
  • Completed 2024
  • Location Rio de Janeiro, Brazil,
  • Located within the Jockey Club of Rio de Janeiro, the new unit of Colégio PH occupies a building from the 1940s, listed as a historical heritage site. The school, which serves students from elementary to high school, required an interior architecture that reflected the innovative spirit of the brand while respecting the history of the location.

The main challenge of the project was to preserve important architectural elements, such as the wooden ceiling of the covered patio, considered a historical and cultural heritage, while integrating contemporary elements that represented the school’s modern vision. The interior revitalization was carefully planned to ensure that each space was functional, comfortable, and inspiring for students and teachers. The choice of materials and finishes prioritized sustainability and durability, aligning with the institution’s values.

To accommodate the educational program offered by the school, new areas were created, such as the maker space, library, and laboratories. The furniture in these spaces was designed to encourage group activities, promoting collaboration and teamwork. Additionally, the outdoor area was completely redesigned, with parks adapted for different age groups, seamlessly integrating with the historical environment.

In one part of the garden, the roots of century-old trees were protected by a metallic structure that also serves as a resting and contemplation area, taking advantage of the natural shade. The former horse riding arena, with its preserved concrete structure and roof, was transformed into a sports court, maintaining the historical essence of the space.

The playground, with wooden toys, was integrated into the old horse stables area, which now houses a multifunctional space. This environment includes a library, an emotional education room, and game areas, offering a complete and diverse educational experience.

The project successfully combined the past and the present, creating an environment that respects the history of the location while promoting innovative and inspiring education.
