Colégio Santa Marcelina in São Paulo implemented a modern architectural project focused on enhancing early childhood education, emphasizing movement, interaction, and integration of indoor and outdoor spaces.
To enhance the learning process and modernize early childhood education environments, Colégio Santa Marcelina implemented a robust architectural project at its São Paulo unit, designed by DecorArquitetura – Arquitetura para Escolas. The project was recognized in the 2024 Club&Casa Design Yearbook, one of the most prestigious awards in the field.
Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, the concept aimed to create an environment where children could experience different situations. The new layout encourages movement and interaction, integrating indoor and outdoor areas to foster autonomy and exploration.
Project development began a year before implementation, with contributions from the pedagogical team, architects, students, and teachers. According to architect Luciana Corrêa, while planning took about a year, execution was swift, occurring between November 2023 and January 2024.
Key improvements included replacing dark rubber flooring in hallways with a lighter material to enhance illumination and installing vinyl flooring in classrooms for better thermal comfort and acoustics. Custom carpentry and new movable furniture were also introduced.
Architect Elaine Delegredo highlights autonomy as a central theme. “We incorporated large glass openings in classrooms to enhance interaction and make the learning model more engaging,” she explains.
A major highlight was the creation of openings connecting classrooms to an external corridor, allowing activities to extend beyond the classrooms. Additionally, the atelier was positioned to face a green area with turtles, promoting integration with nature and natural lighting.
