Kindcentrum Montfoort

EGM Architects’ Kindcentrum Montfoort in the Netherlands masterfully integrates three primary schools and childcare into a vibrant, child-centered environment, fostering collaboration and creativity through thoughtful design and sustainable practices.

  • area / size 44,089 sqft
  • Completed 2023
  • Location Montfoort, Netherlands,
  • Kindcentrum Montfoort brings three primary schools (HoWiBlo, De Hobbitstee, Graaf Jan) and childcare provider Kind&CO together under one roof in a child‑centred, small‑scale new building that supports play, learning and development for ages 0–13. The design uses compact, varied volumes and distinctive light brick facades to fit into the surrounding neighbourhood while making the centre highly visible and legible.

EGM’s concept emphasises clarity and identity: three separate school “units” around a central entrance plaza create direct visual connections between groups, while large windows, high spaces and wide corridors encourage interaction across ages. Each school has its own character and colour, yet shared facilities — music and art studios, kitchens, gym halls, library and flexible play rooms — promote collaboration and community. Flexible elements such as operable walls and a prominent wooden tribune that flows into multifunctional furniture support events and changing uses for almost 600 children.

Nature inspired the layout and materials: gardens blur paths and play areas, planting and biodiversity features (green roofs, integrated nesting boxes) are educational tools, and natural materials and daylighting create a healthy, calming atmosphere. The building is gas‑free and nearly energy‑neutral (BENG), with CO2‑controlled ventilation, heat pumps and heat recovery; it is low‑maintenance and adaptable for future needs. Overall the centre combines pedagogy, sustainability and welcoming design to make learning joyful and inclusive.
