Richland School District Two – Performing Arts Center
McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture designed the Richland School District Two Performing Arts Center in Columbia, as a dynamic hub that fosters creativity, collaboration, and community engagement through innovative learning spaces.
McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture designed the Richland School District Two Performing Arts Center in Columbia, South Carolina, completed in 2024, to advance arts education and community engagement across the 27,000-student district. Located on the Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2) campus, the 55,000-square-foot facility anchors a growing hub for creativity, technology and collaboration, supporting both student learning and public performance.
The design supports a district where 81% of students participate in arts education and where the arts are intentionally woven into STEM curricula to create a true STEAM model. The resulting facility isn’t just a performance venue, rather it’s an active learning environment that nurtures imagination, teamwork and confidence at every level.
At its core is a 1,175-seat auditorium featuring a full-height stage, an orchestra pit with a mechanical lift that can be lowered or raised, and balcony seating for large performances. Multi-use educational spaces expand the building’s reach, with dressing rooms that double as dance studios and rehearsal areas adaptable for black box productions. These flexible spaces allow students to explore every aspect of the performing arts, from set design to stage management.
The center also strengthens the district’s technical theater curriculum, providing opportunities for students to learn about lighting, sound, rigging and stagecraft. Working alongside the Technical Director, students collaborate with R2i2’s engineering program to design and build sets — blending creative and technical disciplines in a real-world environment. The quality of the facility and its integrated educational approach have helped attract and retain high-caliber faculty, reinforcing the district’s reputation for arts excellence.
The building’s architecture mirrors the energy it contains. A bold white overhang and modern curtain wall reveal a light-filled interior that balances durability and warmth through terrazzo flooring, wood-grain paneling, and refined acoustic treatments. The expansive lobby serves as a pre-function and gathering space, as well as a gallery showcasing student artwork and inviting the community to engage with the creative process.
Transparency and flow guide the experience throughout. Views from the lobby extend to outdoor plazas, encouraging movement between interior and exterior spaces. This design fosters inclusivity and accessibility, creating an environment that welcomes students, educators, and community members alike.
In addition to student performances, the center is envisioned as a regional destination for professional productions, civic events and cultural programming. A planned black box theater will further expand its capacity and flexibility. Together, these features make the Richland School District Two Performing Arts Center a visible symbol of the district’s commitment to creativity, innovation and lifelong learning.
