Lamar Institute of Technology – Advanced Technology Center
Corgan’s design for the Lamar Institute of Technology’s Advanced Technology Center in Beaumont, Texas, transforms an existing warehouse into a vibrant learning hub that not only modernizes the campus identity but also immerses students in real-world trade environments.
In response to the growing demand for skilled trades, the Lamar Institute of Technology (LIT) expanded its curriculum and needed an Advanced Technology Center building that would create a modern identity within the campus for new, hands-on training programs. Corgan transformed an existing warehouse into a 15,000-square-foot dynamic learning environment. The new facility is a strategic expansion, making use of available space while supporting long-term program growth.
The design team led visioning sessions with LIT administration and faculty to inform their approach and establish priorities. Through guided discussions and image reviews, it became clear that the exterior of the Advanced Technology Center needed to strike a balance between aligning with the existing site and building aesthetic and creating a new, strong identity on campus. Inside, they prioritized the use of vibrant color and educational graphics to energize the space and extend learning beyond the classroom.
Classrooms and learning spaces are crafted to mirror real-world industry environments, immersing students in settings that closely reflect their future trades. Fully outfitted plumbing and electrical technology labs, along with expansive industrial high-bay space, support curriculum aligned with in-demand workforce needs — bridging the gap between education and career readiness.
To weave education through the design, the building itself acts as a teaching tool. Strategically exposed systems such as ductwork, piping, and structural frameworks visually reinforce technical concepts and give students real-world insight into the mechanics of their fields. The graphic wall treatments were derived from actual construction drawings of building systems that students are trained to install and maintain.
