  • Moseley Architects was tasked with the expansive project to execute a space for Sullivan Middle School and Cherry Park Elementary School of Language Immersion in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Moseley Architects was selected to design the new Language Immersion Academy at Sullivan Middle School (LIA) renovation and the new K-3 addition to the existing Sullivan Middle School. The addition will have a 625 student capacity with a 1000 student core capacity. It will house K-3 grades while the existing Sullivan “F” wing will be renovated to accommodate grades 4 & 5. Sullivan Middle will be renovated to accommodate changes for Language Immersion Program and items identified in the task order.

The new addition is approximately 76,000 square feet in area and is generally described as a two story building. The new addition will be designed in accordance to the 2015 International Building Code and will be considered a separate building under the code. It will be divided from the existing building with a 2 hour firewall. The primary use group is Educational (E) and construction type is IIB, non-combustible constriction. The addition will be fully sprinklered and with the sprinkler increase the total allowed square footage per floor is 43,500 SF. Each floor area of the new addition is below the allowed SF and will not require any fire walls.

The renovation encompasses the entire Sullivan Middle School. The “F” wing will be renovated to house grades 4 & 5 and will be directly connected to the K-3 addition. The rest of the building will house the 900 student for the Middle School Language Academy. Spaces will be reallocated to accommodate the program.

The existing Sullivan Middle school is non-sprinklered and is divided into 10 separate buildings. The renovation will be designed in accordance to the 2015 International Existing Building Code.

According to the existing drawings the structure is fire protected. The roof, structural frame, and interior bearing walls are 1 hour fire rated. The exterior bearing walls, and floor are 2 hour rated. The code analysis is based on information from the existing drawings provided by the owner. This information will be reviewed with the Building Official.
