  • Neumann/Smith Architecture renovated a space for the BORRA Learning Center at Northern Central Michigan College in Petoskey, Michigan.

Teaching and learning techniques are changing. What was once known as lecture-based learning is rapidly becoming obsolete and is being replaced by active learning concepts that emphasize collaborative learning. NCMC recognized theses changing trends and decided to renovate their main campus building in order to stay relevant and recruit future students.

By creating a “one-stop shop” on campus, students are able to not only take advantage of the new student services center, but also collaborate and learn in a way that they never had before. Upgraded classrooms inclusive of state-of-the-art technology, energy efficient LED lighting fixtures, and new HVAC systems provide students with a comfortable and active learning environment.

Completing this phased project on a limited budget proved challenging, however, the team identified project priorities in order to address those issues that provide the most value for dollars spent. Of the top priorities was a new, welcoming entrance to the building that promoted the college’s brand and values, while also providing a modern feel that encourages collaboration in all areas, formal and informal.
